There are multiple methods of breast reconstruction, from expanders and implants to using your own tissue. Options are individualized for each patient on the basis of their expectations, recovery time, and physical condition. Dr. Hadaegh and the office will work with your breast surgeon to make the process of reconstruction as simple as possible.
Is a Breast Reconstruction Right for Me?
Patients who undergo mastectomy surgery and want to restore their breasts are candidates for breast reconstruction. Ideal candidates are healthy, cancer-free, and have no other health conditions. Patients who have realistic goals for breast reconstruction are excellent candidates for surgery.Your Breast Reconstruction Consultation
During your consultation, we will go over your medical records. We will also check if you have other health conditions that could potentially complicate the procedure. Most importantly, we will listen to your goals for your breast reconstruction surgery. A detailed physical exam will be conducted to make sure you are suitable for breast reconstruction surgery. We will give you instructions to prepare your body for the surgery. Before scheduling your surgery, we will answer all your concerns and questions so you will be confident in the procedure.The Procedure
On the day of the breast reconstruction surgery, anesthesia will be administered to prepare the patient. Incisions will then be made. The surgeon will use a specific flap technique and/or insert breast implants. Tissue expansion may be necessary to ensure sufficient room for implants. The nipple and areola will also be reconstructed according to the preferred technique of the surgeon. The incisions will be closed to complete the surgery.The Breast Reconstruction Recovery Process
After the breast reconstruction surgery, bandages or gauze will be placed on the incisions. If they prefer, the patient can hire a healthcare professional to help with the recovery process. The patient must follow the instructions and prescriptions provided by the surgeon. No strenuous physical activities should be performed until allowed by the surgeon. Is Dr. Hadaegh a board certified physician?
Yes. Dr. Hadaegh is a board certified plastic surgeon. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Where will my surgery take place?
Breast reconstruction surgery is performed at either Beverly Hospital or North Shore Medical Center, Salem, under general anesthesia. The operation, itself, takes approximately 2-3 hours depending on your specific treatment plan.
What is recovery like after mastectomy reconstruction?
You could be sore with some swelling after surgery. Discomfort should begin subsiding after a few days, and swelling will gradually diminish over 4-6 weeks. Most patients return to work, driving, and normal basic daily activities within 7-10 days after surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for about 4 weeks after your breast reconstruction.
Will my consultation be with the surgeon?
Yes. All surgical consultations take place with Dr. Anoush Hadaegh. Dr. Hadaegh is a board certified plastic surgeon and will be able to answer all of your questions. Dr. Hadaegh will also perform your surgical procedure.
Am I required to have a consultation before booking surgery?
Yes. A consultation is required and essential to you getting all of the pertinent information you need for your breast reconstruction after mastectomy. The consultation is a perfect format for you to get answers to all of your questions so that you can make informed choices. Your appointment will include a physical exam so that Dr. Hadaegh can best customize your treatment plan.
Is there a fee for my consultation?
No. The consultation fee is usually covered by your insurance.
What is the price of breast reconstruction? Will insurance cover the procedure?
Many insurance companies will cover the cost of breast reconstruction surgery if certain criteria is met. After your consultation with Dr. Hadaegh, our surgical coordinator will check with your insurance company to verify whether they will cover the cost of your breast reconstruction surgery. We recommend that you check with your insurance regarding your benefits, copays and deductibles.
