Tummy Tuck Procedure in North Shore
Tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and can tighten the abdominal muscles if necessary. Tummy tuck gives a smoother and significantly contoured abdominal profile and can help patients achieve their aesthetic goals. Tummy tuck is a popular procedure when patients are seeking a “mommy makeover”, and nearly anyone with a sagging belly, or stubborn problem area in the abdomen, can benefit greatly both physically and emotionally from a tummy tuck.

Am I a good candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Men and women of many ages who want to eliminate loose, hanging skin and/or minor to moderate amounts of excess fat in the abdominal area can be ideal candidates for a tummy tuck. In addition to being in good general health, candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight and able to maintain it without significant weight fluctuations. Considerable weight gain or loss after tummy tuck surgery can compromise results. Additionally, since pregnancy dramatically alters the abdominal tissues and muscles, women are advised to wait to have a tummy tuck until their family is complete. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anoush Hadaegh can evaluate your aesthetic concerns and determine if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck during your initial consultation. He will also provide before-and-after photos of his previous tummy tuck patients that you can view to better understand what can be accomplished with this procedure.
Some women choose to have other procedures in combination with their tummy tuck. Common procedures to combine with a tummy tuck include liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lift. Combination procedures, when performed, take full advantage of the recovery period and provide a more comprehensive makeover.
Your Tummy Tuck Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Hadaegh will answer any of your questions, discuss your goals and concerns, and will present all of your treatment options. Your eligibility for a tummy tuck will be based on your goals, overall health, medical history, and a thorough physical examination. This examination will also ensure that Dr. Hadaegh can best customize your treatment plan. A comprehensive review of the candidate’s medical history will be done to ensure a clear understanding of any potential contraindications or health considerations related to the tummy tuck procedure.
How to Prepare for Tummy Tuck Surgery
Before surgery, you need to have a consultation with Dr. Hadaegh. During your Tummy Tuck Surgery consultation with Dr. Hadaegh, he will ask you about your medical history and any other surgeries or procedures you may have had. It is important to tell him about any medications you take as well. This includes NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen, and any other blood-thinning medications, as these can increase the risk of bleeding. In the days leading up to your surgery, Dr. Hadaegh may ask you to stop consuming certain medications, along with tobacco and alcohol. Follow his advice carefully to ensure your safety and set yourself up for a smooth recovery.
Before your surgery, you should arrange for family, a friend, or another trusted individual to transport you to and from the hospital.
The Procedure
Tummy tuck surgery usually takes a few hours. To begin, you will be given anesthesia, which will keep you comfortable during the procedure. Next, the surgeon will make the necessary incision. For a full tummy tuck, the incision is typically made horizontally between the hip bones, while a mini tummy tuck will require a smaller incision placed lower on the abdomen. The surgeon can then remove excess fat and skin and tighten the abdominal muscles, as needed, to create smoother, firmer contours. Once all changes have been made, sutures will be carefully placed to close the incision. You will be monitored on-site for a short time until your surgeon determines it is safe to release you into the care of a trusted friend or family member who can drive you home and assist you around the house for the first day or two of your recovery.
If you have lost weight but can’t seem to get rid of that pooch on your lower belly, then you might only need a mini tummy tuck. This variation on the traditional abdominoplasty is less invasive than a full tummy tuck surgery and only removes the extra tissue below the belly button.
