One of the most popular nonsurgical procedures performed in the U.S. is Botox. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery North Shore, our patients love Botox and Dr. Anoush Hadaegh is the only person injecting it here. That’s right, every Botox injection performed at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery North Shore is done by a surgeon.
How Does Botox Work?
Expression lines and wrinkles are caused when the facial muscles repeatedly contract into the same positions over the span of several years. Botox is a neuromodulator and a form of botulinum toxin type A. This special protein temporarily blocks neuromuscular signals responsible for creating lines and wrinkles on your face.
Once the Botox is injected, the muscles are relaxed and their movements decrease. Botox allows for relaxation of facial lines, providing a smoothed out and refreshed appearance. Botox is FDA approved for the treatment of facial lines, including “crow’s feet”, and the effects of Botox last on average 3-5 months.
Which Areas Can Be Treated Using Botox?
Botox can treat fine lines and wrinkles on several facial areas, including the forehead, the cheeks, the chin, between the brows, around the eyes, and around the lips. It can also be injected into the neck muscles to resolve harsh vertical neck bands.
When injected into the jaw muscles, it can alleviate the pain caused by TMJ and bruxism (teeth grinding). It can also slim the jawline in this way. When injected into areas affected by hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), it can resolve this issue.
What Happens During the Procedure?
Botox is a quick procedure that typically takes 20 minutes at most. At the start of the procedure, the injection sites are marked as a guide. Units of Botox are injected into the targeted areas using an ultra-fine needle. The treatment is not painful, and anesthesia is not typically required, though a topical anesthetic can be requested.
Many people get the treatment done during their lunch hour and get back to work immediately after the procedure. No downtime or recovery time is required.
When Do Results Appear?
In most cases, it takes about three to five days for Botox’s effects to appear. It can take up to ten days to see the full results.
Over time, Botox is metabolized by the body, which causes muscle movement to gradually return and wrinkles to reappear. To maintain their youthful appearance and smooth skin, patients will need maintenance treatments every three to five months.
