Am I A Good Candidate?

Anyone who has undergone breast augmentation and is not satisfied with the result is a good candidate for a breast revision procedure. You may also be recommended for this secondary treatment if you are dealing with complications from your original breast augmentation, such as:
  • “Double bubble” – This can happen when the implant is sitting entirely or partially below the old breast crease, either from dropping or incorrect placement, resulting in an extra bulge below the crease.
  • Bottoming-out implants – The implants have lowered (unrelated to the crease), but the nipples retain their positioning, affecting breast shape.
  • Wide cleavage – If your former surgeon creates a pocket that is too large or stretches over time, the effect can be breasts that are too far apart.
  • Symmastia – Conversely, implants can be placed too close together or are touching, which could cause a lack of cleavage.
  • Malpositioned and asymmetric breast implants – Other incorrect implant insertion techniques can result in the breasts being asymmetrical in terms of shape, size, and/or location.
  • Implant leakage or rupture – Implants can sometimes rupture or leak from an injury or incorrect insertion. Saline is salt water, so it isn’t a health risk. Still, ruptured saline implants can give patients a “deflated” appearance that needs to be corrected. Silicone implants can also rupture, potentially causing pain or a change in breast shape.
  • Capsular contracture – In rare cases, patients experience hardening of the breast tissue around their implants over time. The resulting “capsule” of scar tissue eventually deforms the breasts and makes them painful and asymmetric.
Additionally, ideal candidates for a breast revision are non-smokers and have realistic expectations in terms of their results. Smoking can negatively affect tissue health, resulting in a prolonged recovery period.

Your Breast Revision Consultation

When visiting Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of North Shore, we recommend bringing the records from the primary augmentation procedure. Dr. Hadaegh will ask you about your breast revision goals. He will look over the documents you’ve provided and perform an examination. Dr. Hadaegh customizes his approach to each individual. He carefully examines every patient to determine the cause of any prior undesirable surgical outcome, and then creates an individualized revision plan. This may include changing implant size, scar revision, and or improving the position of the nipple/areola. Additionally, Dr. Hadaegh has significant experience removing capsular contracture tissue. One of his main goals is to make the breast(s) soft and natural-looking once again.

How to Prepare for Cosmetic Breast Revision Surgery

Preparing for cosmetic breast revision surgery is a crucial step in ensuring a successful and satisfying outcome. Whether you’re seeking to replace breast implants, correct a previous surgery, or make other enhancements, thorough preparation is essential. Here’s a handy guide to help you get ready for your cosmetic breast revision surgery:

Review Your Medical History

Be prepared to provide your surgeon with a comprehensive medical history, including any previous surgeries, medical conditions, allergies, and medications you’re currently taking.

Diagnostic Imaging

In some cases, your surgeon may require diagnostic imaging, such as mammograms or ultrasounds, to evaluate the condition of your breast tissue and implants.

Pre-Operative Instructions

Your surgeon will provide pre-operative instructions that you must follow closely. These may include dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, and lifestyle changes in the days that lead up to surgery.

Arrange for Transportation and Recovery Assistance

You will need someone to drive you to and from the surgery center on the day of your procedure. Arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you and provide post-surgery support. Ensure you have help with daily activities and childcare if needed.

Post-Operative Care Supplies

Stock up on necessary items, such as pain medication, ice packs, and gauze, to ensure a comfortable recovery.

Medication Management

Follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding medication management. This may include discontinuing certain medications like blood thinners before surgery.

Follow-Up Appointments

Schedule any required follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and address any concerns during your recovery.

Fasting Instructions

Typically, you’ll be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything after midnight on the night before surgery. This is to prevent complications from anesthesia.

Comfortable Clothing

On the day of surgery, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that can be easily removed and won’t put pressure on your chest. By diligently preparing for your cosmetic breast revision surgery, you can optimize your chances of achieving your desired results while ensuring a safe and smooth recovery. Remember to communicate openly with your surgeon throughout the process and follow their guidance closely to achieve the best possible outcome.

The Procedure

Breast revision surgery can last from one to four hours. General anesthesia is administered to the patient, and the surgeon begins the procedure once it takes effect. The incisions from the first breast augmentation will be used to perform the revision surgery. After the planned corrections have been made, the incisions will be sealed with medical sutures. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of North Shore, we offer many breast implant types and styles, including MENTOR and Natrelle, to best fit your goals. We use the MENTOR sizing system during your consultation with Dr. Hadaegh, which allows you to see what your desired results will look like. Some women choose to have other procedures in combination with their breast augmentation, such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, or breast lift. Combination treatments, when performed, take full advantage of the recovery period and provide a more comprehensive makeover. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of North Shore, your safety and satisfaction are always our primary focus.

Where Will My Surgery Take Place?

Breast revision surgery is performed at either Beverly Hospital or North Shore Medical Center, Salem.

What Is Recovery Like After Breast Revision Surgery?

The recovery period is similar to that of the primary breast augmentation procedure. Additional techniques used can increase the healing period. You could be sore with some swelling for the first few days after surgery. The patient must wear a supportive bra without an underwire during recovery. Most patients return to work, driving, and normal daily activities within 7-10 days after surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for 4-6 weeks. The patient must come back to the clinic for a follow-up appointment to have their sutures removed. The progress of recovery will be monitored.

Am I Required To Have A Consultation Before Booking Surgery?

Yes. A consultation is required and essential to you getting all of the pertinent information you need so that you can make informed choices.

Is There A Fee For My Consultation?

Yes. There is a $150 consultation fee that is charged to you at the time you book your appointment. You will have a full hour with Dr. Hadaegh to discuss everything related to your procedure. Should you decide to proceed with your breast revision, the consultation fee will be applied as a credit to your total procedure cost.

Will Insurance Cover The Price of My Breast Revision?

Typically, no. Breast revision surgery is generally considered a cosmetic procedure and, therefore, not medically necessary. It’s best to check with your specific insurance company if you have additional questions about your coverage.

Can I Finance My Breast Revision Surgery?

Yes! Our patients often use CareCredit to finance their procedures. We also accept all major credit cards.
