Breast Revision

Conveniently located to serve Boston, Cambridge, Peabody, and Manchester

Breast revision is a secondary procedure performed on the breast to correct issues resulting from a previous breast procedure. With breast revision, North Shore, MA, patients can rely on Dr. Hadaegh to make the desired changes after a primary breast augmentation.

Dr. Hadaegh is considered one of the top surgeons for breast revision on the North Shore and North Boston. He has patients travel from all over New England and beyond for correction of undesirable surgical results. These issues can include “double bubble” deformities, bottom-out implants, wide cleavage, and malpositioned and asymmetric breast implants.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Anyone who has undergone breast augmentation and is not satisfied with the result is a good candidate for a breast revision procedure. People who are suffering complications from their primary breast augmentation are also recommended for this secondary procedure.

Ideal candidates are non-smokers and have realistic expectations in terms of their results. Smoking can negatively affect tissue health, resulting in a prolonged recovery period.

Your Breast Revision Consultation

When visiting Aesthetic Plastic Surgery North Shore, the patient is recommended to bring the records from the primary augmentation procedure. Dr. Hadaegh will ask you about your goals for breast revision. He will look over the records you’ve provided and perform an examination.

Using his surgical expertise, Dr. Hadaegh customizes his approach to each individual. He carefully examines every patient to determine the cause of any prior undesirable surgical outcome, and then creates a custom revision plan. This plan may include changing implant size, scar revision, and or improving the position of the nipple/areola.

Some patients experience hardening of the breast tissue around their implants over time. This capsule of scar tissue eventually deforms the breasts and makes them painful and asymmetric. Dr. Hadaegh has significant experience removing the capsular contracture tissue. This process allows the breast(s) to be soft and natural looking once again.

How to Prepare for Cosmetic Breast Revision Surgery

Preparing for cosmetic breast revision surgery is a crucial step in ensuring a successful and satisfying outcome. Whether you’re seeking to replace breast implants, correct a previous surgery, or make other enhancements, thorough preparation is essential. Here’s a handy guide to help you prepare for your cosmetic breast revision surgery.

Review Your Medical History: Be prepared to provide your surgeon with a comprehensive medical history, including any previous surgeries, medical conditions, allergies, and medications you’re currently taking.

Diagnostic Imaging: In some cases, your surgeon may require diagnostic imaging, such as mammograms or ultrasounds, to evaluate the condition of your breast tissue and implants.

Pre-Operative Instructions: Your surgeon will provide pre-operative instructions that you must follow closely. These may include dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, and lifestyle changes in the days that lead up to surgery.

Arrange for Transportation: You will need someone to drive you to and from the surgery center on the day of your procedure. Arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you and provide post-surgery support.

Arrange for Recovery Assistance: Plan for someone to assist you during the initial recovery period, as you may have limited mobility. Ensure you have help with daily activities and childcare if needed.

Post-Operative Care Supplies: Stock up on necessary supplies, such as pain medication, ice packs, and gauze, to ensure a comfortable recovery period.

Medication Management: Follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding medication management. This may include discontinuing certain medications like blood thinners before surgery.

Follow-Up Appointments: Schedule any required follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and address any concerns during your recovery.

Fasting Instructions: Typically, you’ll be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything after midnight on the night before surgery. Follow these fasting instructions to prevent complications from anesthesia.

Comfortable Clothing: On the day of surgery, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that can be easily removed and won’t put pressure on your chest.

By diligently preparing for your cosmetic breast revision surgery, you can optimize your chances of achieving your desired results while ensuring a safe and smooth recovery. Remember to maintain open communication with your surgeon throughout the process and follow their guidance closely to achieve the best possible outcome.

The Procedure

The breast revision procedure can last from one to four hours. Anesthesia is administered to the patient, and once it takes effect, the surgeon begins the procedure. The incisions from the first breast augmentation procedure will be used to perform the revision surgery. After the planned revisions have been made, the incisions will be sealed with medical sutures.

Where will my surgery take place?

Breast revision surgery is performed at either Beverly Hospital or North Shore Medical Center, Salem, under general anesthesia. The operation, itself, takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on your specific treatment plan.

What will my procedure be like?

The details of a breast revision procedure vary from patient to patient based on the specific issues that need to be addressed, along with the exact techniques required.

The surgery begins with administration of general anesthesia. Once it has taken effect, incisions are created. These will typically be the same incisions that were used during the patient’s initial breast augmentation. Doing this avoids creation of new post-surgical marks.

Next, the required changes are made. These changes may include removal of implants, alteration or removal of the scar-tissue capsule, and placement of new breast implants. Finally, the incisions are closed with the help of surgical sutures.

What is recovery like after breast revision surgery?

The recovery period is similar to that of the primary breast augmentation procedure. Additional techniques done during the procedure can increase the healing period.

Temporary swelling and bruising will occur after the procedure. You could be sore with some swelling for the first few days after surgery. The patient will need to wear a supportive bra without underwire during the recovery process.

Most patients return to work, driving, and normal basic daily activities within 7-10 days after surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for 4-6 weeks after your breast revision.

The patient must come back to the clinic for a follow-up appointment to have their sutures removed. The progress of recovery will be monitored.
