Liposuction is an effective procedure to improve body shape by removing unwanted fat from the chin, neck, arms, thighs, “love handles” (flanks), abdomen, and hips. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery North Shore realizes that, despite best efforts at routine exercise and dieting, sometimes stubborn fat just won’t go away. We offer liposuction in North Shore, MA, to achieve effective fat removal.

Recovery time is minimal after a lipo procedure, with most patients returning to work in about 4 days (depending on job duties). Exercise may be resumed in approximately 4 weeks after the procedure.

Dr. Anoush Hadaegh is a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in body contouring for more than 15 years. Dr. Hadaegh has an eye for detail and is always focused on your unique needs, concerns, safety, and satisfaction.

At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery North Shore, we regularly perform two methods of liposuction: tumescent liposuction, SmartLipo, and SAFELipo..

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a type of liposuction introduced in the 1990s that made the procedure safer and more patient friendly. This method involves the injection of a tumescent fluid in order to make the fatty tissue swell, or become tumescent, which allows for easier removal.

Tumescent fluid is composed of epinephrine, lidocaine, and normal saline. Epinephrine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it shrinks blood vessels to prevent bleeding. Lidocaine is a type of local anesthetic that is used to numb the region to any pain or discomfort.

During the process, a cannula (a thin tube with a sharp end) is used to dislodge fat from the surrounding tissues and then remove it using suction. Once the procedure is complete, stitches are usually not needed.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a state-of-the-art form of laser lipolysis used to safely remove fat and tighten the skin. The use of laser energy helps to melt fat cells, thus ensuring that more fat can be removed in less time.

Traditional liposuction requires loosening fat cells from surrounding tissue, which can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues. With SmartLipo, this is not required, reducing potential tissue trauma. As a result of this, there is less post-treatment swelling and bruising.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia. Sedation may be used to make the patient comfortable. A small incision is made in the area to be treated. Tumescent fluid is injected, and once the numbing has taken effect, the SmartLipo probe is inserted. It has a fiber optic tip that delivers laser energy to the fat. This melts fat, making it very easy to remove using suction.

The heat of the laser also remodels collagen and elastin proteins in the skin tissues, resulting in tighter skin. This helps to avoid drooping excess skin after fat removal. No sutures are needed after the procedure; instead, a skin adhesive is used.

SAFELipo

SAFELipo is a liposuction procedure that has become more and more popular in recent years. Initially, it was a corrective procedure for liposuction patients who did not get desired results from a traditional liposuction surgery. However, it is now much more than just a corrective procedure.

SAFELipo’s high accuracy and low trauma rate has resulted in SAFELipo becoming one of the most widely chosen liposuction procedures for both first-timers and revision patients.

The SAFELipo procedure consists of three steps:

  1. Separation of fat from surrounding tissue – The first step involves separating fat pockets from surrounding tissues. The fat pockets are gently dislodged through power-assisted liposuction (PAL), which produces rapid vibrations. These vibrations result in emulsification of fat without damage to surrounding tissues.
  2. Removal of fat – Once the fat pockets have been dislodged, the fat cells are removed by Dr. Hadaegh. SAFELipo involves the gentle removal of fat, which leaves a thin layer of fat behind. Because this is a gentle process, it avoids side effects like internal scarring, swelling, and bruising.
  3. Equalization of fat – The third step involves the equalization of fat through the use of probes. This process evens out the layer of fat left behind after fat separation and removal. This results in even contours, helping patients avoid contour irregularities that would otherwise require corrective procedures.

Combination Procedures

Some people choose to have other procedures in combination with liposuction. Breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and fat grafting are all procedures that, when combined with liposuction, create a more comprehensive makeover. Combination procedures can be performed safely and take full advantage of your recovery period. Liposuction can also be performed as part of male breast reduction to resolve gynecomastia.

Combination procedures are often recommended to patients who have cosmetic goals which cannot be achieved through one cosmetic procedure alone. When determining the number of procedures to be combined in a single surgical session, the healing capacity of a patient is always taken into account.

Liposuction FAQ

Is Dr. Hadaegh a board certified physician?

Yes. Dr. Hadaegh is a board certified plastic surgeon. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. His skills and experience make him an ideal choice for a wide variety of cosmetic procedures, including liposuction.

Where will my surgery take place?

Liposuction surgery is performed at either Beverly Hospital or North Shore Medical Center, Salem, under general anesthesia. Both of these state-of-the-art facilities provide a safe and comfortable environment for patients. The operation, itself, takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on your specific treatment plan.

Is liposuction painful?

Liposuction is not a painful procedure. Since liposuction is performed under either general or local anesthesia, the patient will not feel pain during the surgery. There may be soreness afterwards once the anesthesia fully wears off, and this can be addressed with painkillers as prescribed.

Does liposuction leave incision marks?

Liposuction requires the creation of very tiny incisions. Dr. Hadaegh’s high degree of skill and experience allows him to effectively camouflage any post-surgical marks. He will also provide aftercare instructions to further minimize their appearance.

What is recovery like after liposuction?

Since liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, you will most likely be able to go home the day of the procedure once you are cleared to return home. Dr. Hadaegh will once again go through the recovery process before allowing you to go home. However, you will not be able to drive yourself home, so a designated driver must be arranged prior to the procedure for safety reasons.

You will be sore with some swelling after your procedure. Discomfort should begin subsiding after a few days, and swelling will gradually diminish over 4-6 weeks. Most patients return to work, driving, and normal basic daily activities within 4 days after surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for about 4 weeks after your liposuction. Additionally, you will wear a compression garment on the treated area for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Does liposuction permanently remove fat?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the body. Unfortunately, because it is impossible to remove every fat cell from an area, the remaining fat cells can still swell in size. To avoid this, follow Dr. Hadaegh’s recommendations for lifestyle changes, proper diet, and regular exercise. A healthy lifestyle and avoiding or limiting weight gain will prevent changes in liposuction results.

Will my consultation be with the surgeon?

Yes. All surgical consultations take place with Dr. Anoush Hadaegh. Dr. Hadaegh is a board certified plastic surgeon and will be able to answer all of your questions. Dr. Hadaegh will also perform your surgical procedure.

Am I required to have a consultation before booking surgery?

Yes. A consultation is critical to the safety and success of the procedure. During your consultation, you will discuss your goals with Dr. Hadaegh. You will need to disclose past cosmetic procedures, current medications and supplements, and any allergies.

Dr. Hadaegh will check your medical records and evaluate your health. He will perform an examination of the target areas, and photographs may be taken for comparison purposes.

Dr. Hadaegh will then create a surgical plan for your liposuction. The recommended surgical plan will depend on Dr. Hadaegh’s assessment and your cosmetic goals. He will discuss the details of the surgical plan with you, including preparation, the recovery process, and a cost estimate. He will also show you photos of potential results. Instructions will be given to prepare you for the procedure.

Is there a fee for my consultation?

Yes. There is a $150 consultation fee that is charged to you at the time you book your appointment. You will have a full hour with Dr. Hadaegh to discuss everything related to your procedure. Should you decide to move forward with your liposuction, the consultation fee will be applied as a credit to your total procedure balance.

Will insurance cover the price of my liposuction?

Typically, no. Liposuction is generally considered a cosmetic procedure and therefore not medically necessary. It’s best to check with your specific insurance company if you have additional questions about your coverage.

Can I finance my liposuction?

Yes! Our patients often use Care Credit to finance the cost of their procedures. We also accept all major credit cards. You can choose a payment plan at your convenience.
