Nose Reshaping North Shore MA
Nose reshaping, also known as rhinoplasty or a nose job, is a facial plastic surgery procedure performed to achieve a smaller, more sculpted, and more natural-looking nose that complements the rest of the face. This procedure can improve one’s breathing and facial appearance.
The nose is one of the most fascinating facial structures. It is a combination of skin, bone, and cartilage. Many people do not like the appearance of their nose for a number of different reasons, and in some patients, the inner structures of their nose can even create breathing problems.
Both of these types of issues can be corrected with nasal surgery. In some cases, septal repairs to correct breathing issues (septoplasty surgery) may be covered by insurance if certain criteria are met.
Nose reshaping requires special expertise in order to assure that the stability of the nose has been preserved. Dr. Hadaegh is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 10 years’ experience in facial rejuvenation, including rhinoplasty. During a consultation, he listens to your concerns and goals, then discusses the options with you to formulate a customized approach in order to achieve natural-looking results.
Some choose to have other procedures in combination with nose surgery, such as a facelift, neck lift, or eyelid lift in North Shore, MA, for a more comprehensive makeover. Combination procedures like these can be performed to help avoid the need for multiple recovery periods.
Nose Reshaping: Details of the Procedure
At the start of rhinoplasty surgery, general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is administered according to the preferences of Dr. Hadaegh and the patient. This helps to avoid any patient discomfort or pain during the procedure.
A very small incision is then created. This can be made in the columella (the external strip of tissue between the nostrils) to perform open rhinoplasty, which offers the doctor more access to the underlying structures. In this technique, the nasal skin is lifted.
For closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils. This option is better for changes that are more minor in nature.
Once the incisions have been created, the bones, cartilage, and soft tissue of the nose are adjusted as needed. In some cases, cartilage grafts are inserted in order to bolster the strength of the nasal architecture. These grafts may be harvested from the ear, rib, or nasal septum.
To complete the nose-reshaping surgery, the incisions are closed with the help of surgical sutures. A splint, cast, or packing material may be used as needed to dress the area for recovery.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Healing
The healing process after nasal surgery will require a degree of downtime. Patients typically require around a week off from work to rest and recover. During this time, patients are advised to avoid blowing their nose, as this can disrupt the weakened nasal tissues. In situations where it cannot be avoided, blowing very gently is recommended.
Swelling and bruising will be present on and around the nose for a time. These issues will gradually fade. To help this process, a cold compress can be carefully held against the area. Keeping your head elevated at all times is encouraged.
Keep your nose irrigated during the recovery process to prevent blood clots. Avoid participating in any activities that could lead to nasal trauma, and take prescribed pain medication as needed.
